Issue 189: Open phones, be the messenger and the USB-C of AI

WeAreDevelopers World Congress 8-10/7/26 - get 15% off using code devdigest

Hello fellow developer, with lots of new releases of tools and some high profile security breaches this week we've been busy to keep up. As always though, not everything new is also immediately applicable or safe to use, so maybe it makes sense to take a look at how some of the new hotness impacts your work and the security and performance of your solutions. Dive in to see for yourself what you can do to stay speedy. And if you are at All Things Open in Raleigh, NC next week, say hi as I will be there!

The call for papers for the first two of our 2026 events is out! So send us your talk outlines for the WeAreDevelopers World Congress in Berlin 8-10/7/26 or the WeAreDevelopers World Congress North America in San Jose 23-25/9/26!

Opening the Mobile Space with Camara's Network APIs

The mobile space has traditionally been a closed and proprietary world and many open alternatives like Firefox OS, Sailfish or the Ubuntu Phone came and went without leaving much of an impact. But there is hope, like the Camara Project which brings together 396 companies and 1100+ contributors to build APIs that work across various providers. We talked with folks from Telefónica, Orange and Deutsche Telekom about some of the APIs they agreed on and you can use now to make it easier for your mobile users to identify themselves. Check out the Coffee With Developers about Camara's Network APIs.
